What you'll learn

  • Through this section, you will gain insights into why local food strategies are essential to address today’s interconnected food challenges, especially in urban areas. The resources highlight key pressures such as population growth, food insecurity, unhealthy diets, and environmental impacts, showing the need for urgent action. You will explore how cities can drive change through effective governance, stakeholder engagement, and cross-sector collaboration.
  • You will also discover how urban innovation -such as shorter supply chains, community initiatives, and sustainable public procurement- is helping build more resilient and inclusive food systems. Practical examples and guidance support the design and implementation of local strategies, from system assessment to policy development.
  • The link between diets, climate, and health will be explored, highlighting the importance of more plant-rich diets alongside fair access to nutritious food. Overall, this section shows how local action can create healthier, more sustainable, and equitable food systems.

Requirements

  • To enrol in the Food Systems pillar you need to be part of the SPARKLE learning community.
